In public hearings on February 20th and 21st, residents of San Tan Valley, Arizona spoke loud and clear: the water quality provided by Johnson Utilities is substandard at best. According to numerous customer complaints, as reported by ABC15, “the water smells like sewage and chemicals” and “comes out of the taps brown or discolored.”

This isn’t the first time Johnson Utilities customers have experienced problems with their drinking water. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) warned Johnson Utilities customers in November 2016 of high nitrate levels in their drinking water. High nitrate levels are generally caused from the leaching of fertilizers into the ground water, which in turn makes its way into the drinking water. High levels of nitrates are particularly dangerous for infants and the elderly, as their bodies are unable to process nitrates properly. According to ADEQ, infants younger than 6 months old could become seriously ill and, if untreated, can have a fatal outcome.

While the Arizona Corporation Commission investigates the complaints made against Johnson Utilities, it begs the question: What do residents do to ensure they have safe, clean water for their homes? How long will residents of San Tan Valley have to worry about the water they bathe in and cook with?

What You Can Do To Protect Your Home and Family

  1. Use carbon-based filters for drinking water.

Carbon will significantly reduce the presence of chlorine, organic arsenic and mercury, and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), which include pesticides, herbicides and industrial solvents.

  1. Clean the water provided from Johnson Utilities before it enters your home.
